Mote Park art exhibition opens after record number of entries
A free exhibition of shortlisted entries from the Mote Park art competition is now open to the public at the park’s Learning Space until Sunday 8 November 2026.
The annual Maidstone Borough Council competition attracted a record number of entries, with judges selecting 40 artworks for display from more than 100 submissions.
Artists used ink, watercolours, 3D models and more to capture the ‘Park Life’ theme in their original artwork.
The over-18 category winner Keely Dunnil used charcoal to create a striking two-metre artwork, A Walk in the Park, while under-18 winner Alfie LePine made a diorama of his favourite spot, the Mote Park waterfall.
The runners-up in both categories drew from the boathouse and the play equipment, showing the range of inspiration from the park.
Visitors to the exhibition are also being asked to vote for their favourite piece. The artist with the most votes will receive a £50 voucher for art supplies, courtesy of Marathon Wealth Management, who sponsor the competition.
The prize-winners were announced at a special launch event attended by Head Judge and local artist Cas Holmes, Cllr Stephen Thompson, Cabinet Member for Healthier Stronger Communities, and Ben Harper from Marathon Wealth Management.
Speaking about the competition and exhibition, Cllr Thompson said:
“This year's competition has attracted some truly impressive entries, and selecting the shortlist was no easy task. From paintings and textiles to sculpture and mixed media, the creativity on display is remarkable.
“Looking at these artworks, it is so heartwarming to see what people love about our park and to hear how much it means to them.
"It's also been wonderful to see new artists entering the competition and I would encourage everyone to come along, enjoy the exhibition and vote for their favourite artwork.”
Located at the Mote Park Learning Space, next to the café, the exhibition will be open daily from10:30am to 3:30pm.
