Residents are being encouraged register to vote ahead of May’s local elections for MBC.

Residents are being encouraged register to vote ahead of May’s local elections for Maidstone Borough Council (MBC).

The election takes place on Thursday 2 May 2019, with polling hours between 7am and 10pm, with the count taking place on Friday 3 May.

Alison Broom, Electoral Returning Officer at MBC, said: “Maidstone Borough Council aims to give everyone within the borough the opportunity to have their say in local democratic decisions.

“You must be registered to vote to have your say in the local elections in May.  It's really easy to register online and only takes five minutes. So please don't delay and get registered before the deadline.”

A third of the 55 seats are up for election.  These are: Allington, Bearsted, Boxley, Coxheath & Hunton, Detling & Thurnham Fant, Downswood & Otham, East, Harrietsham & Lenham, High Street, Leeds, Loose, Marden & Yalding, North, Sheway North, South, Sutton Valence & Langley, and Staplehurst. Out of 18 Parishes, 16 were uncontested and elections will be held in Staplehurst and Yalding.

Residents who are not currently registered to vote are encouraged to visit www.gov.uk/register-to-vote. All applications must be made by 12 April 2019.

Those who wish to arrange a postal vote can find further information at MBC Voting & Elections webpage or by contacting Electoral Services at electoralservices@maidstone.gov.uk. Completed applications for a postal vote must be received by 5pm on 15 April 2019.

Any elector who wishes to arrange a proxy vote must have their application received by 5pm on 24 April.
