News MBC preparing for May 2021 elections
Maidstone Borough Council (MBC) is encouraging residents to prepare ahead of Thursday 6 May 2021 – the date scheduled for them to have their say at the Borough, County, Police & Crime Commissioner and Parish Council Elections.
Whilst the elections are six months away, MBC is already making plans to help residents stay safe when casting their vote.
There is a number of ways that people can cast their votes; in person at a polling station, by post, or by appointing someone they trust to vote on their behalf – this is known as a proxy vote.
In line with current Covid-19 government guidance, the Council is putting arrangements in place to help electors to cast their vote safely at a polling station with measures including hand sanitiser, floor markings, social distancing, one-way systems, and face masks. We will take into account whatever guidance is in place at the time to ensure that these venues are Covid-19 secure is implemented.
MBC is also reminding people that they need to register to vote and is encouraging them to do that now.
Alison Broom, Electoral Returning Officer at MBC, said:
“We want to make sure that everyone within the borough who is entitled to vote has the opportunity to have their say in who gets elected in the multiple elections next May and we are taking every precaution to ensure that plans are in place so that all our electors can do that safely in May.“You need to be registered to vote in order to have a say at the elections – the easiest way to register is online at www.gov.uk/register-to-vote
“If you’re thinking about voting by post or proxy, you can apply now. This will ensure that your application is processed in good time, and your postal vote can be sent to you as early as possible once the election process commences next April. It’s easy to apply and you can find out how by visiting the Electoral Commission website.”
