Maidstone Borough Council (MBC) can announce that it has elected its Leader for the new civic year (2021/22), who is Councillor David Burton (Conservative – Marden and Yalding ward).

The appointment of Cllr Burton as Leader of MBC was uncontested at the Council’s Annual General Meeting which – due to Covid-19 restrictions, was held at the Kent Event Centre, Detling Showground on Saturday 22 May.

Commenting on becoming MBC’s new Leader, Cllr Burton said:

“I am delighted to have been elected as Leader of Maidstone Borough Council.

“I initially became a Councillor in 2010 and have always been determined to make this a borough that works for everyone, working together and not just talking about things but making sure we get things done.

“I believe accountability is very important and that it is vital that as a Council, we work together with our partners and stakeholders to deliver the necessary infrastructure, and provide a borough that is safe, clean and green. Working together we, as a Council will talk with and listen to our residents, businesses and communities and deliver what matters to them.”

Cllr Jonathan Purle (Conservative – Bridge ward), was elected as the Deputy Leader of the Council.
