News Art and Domestic Design Talks at Maidstone Museum
Come along for talks with expert speakers at Maidstone Museum on the four Saturdays in March about domestic design and art restoration.
All talks will start at 11.30am and last for around 45 minutes with a question and answer session at the end, they are priced at £6 each or buy a ticket for all four at the reduced cost of £20. Maidstone Borough Council (MBC) owns and runs Maidstone Museum which gives visitors the opportunity to experience culture and history in one of the finest museums in the South East.
The first fascinating talk ‘Where the Suburbs meet Utopia’ on Sat 4 March looks back at the rise in suburban gardens from the mid 19th to 20th centuries and how homeowners created their own individual utopias. The enthralling insight into creating beautiful gardens will be given by Dr Twigs Way.
Cllr Claudine Russell, Lead Member for Leisure and Arts at Maidstone Borough Council said:
These four talks will give an interesting insight into the history of our love of art, decorating our homes and gardens and how this has changed over the years. They will also look at the wonderful Museum buildings, peeling back the layers of time to reveal the sometimes murky past. Why not book on to all four talks?
On Sat 11 March join Nick Hampshire, President of the Maidstone Art Society, for a talk about his experiences in the art world. He will also be exploring art restoration, with before and after illustrated examples of restoration projects with ‘Life of an Art Dealer and Picture Restorer’.
For an insightful talk by the Museum’s Public Programming Manager, Lyn Palmer, book the talk on Sat 18 March for a look at ‘Buildings of Maidstone Museum’. Lyn will explain how the complex buildings have evolved over centuries and look at how local families built, lived and worked in them, decorating the walls according to their taste (sometimes dubious!) and creating gardens which bloomed with colour.
The final talk on Sat 25 March looks at how wallpaper can transform a room as well as reveal a hidden past as layers are papered over layers, ‘From Flocks to Florals: A History of Wallpaper’. Lucy Ellis will look at design, manufacture, selling and promotion as she unrolls the fascinating story of wallpaper.
