Maidstone Borough Council (MBC) is working with local charity - Involve Kent on a Green Spaces project in the town centre.

Funded by the UK Shared Prosperity Fund (UKSPF), Green Spaces brings together local residents to help improve areas in their community whilst boosting their own wellbeing. MBC is supporting Involve to source green spaces in the town centre that can be cleared, planted and made nicer for everyone to enjoy.

As part of ‘National Volunteers’ Week’ (1-8 June), and to launch Green Spaces a pop-up event is being held in Brenchley Gardens tomorrow - Friday 2 June, 11am – 3pm, when everyone is invited to go along and find out about the project, how they can get involved and other volunteering opportunities.

MBC Cabinet Member for Communities, Leisure and Arts - Cllr Claudine Russell said:

“Green Spaces is a great project which not only offers the people of Maidstone the chance to become involved, volunteer and be part of their community but also improve some lovely areas around the town centre throughout the year.

“We know that spending time outside and being physically active improves our wellbeing so I would encourage as many people as possible to volunteer for this project which will bring people together as a community and help them to feel more connected to, and passionate about, the place they live in.”

The Involve Horticultural Therapist will also be on hand at the pop-up event on Friday when people can find out more about the Green Spaces project. The volunteer team has already been out and about in the town centre, refreshing the planters on Week Street and clearing the flowerbeds on the riverside to make them look tidier.

Sam Phillips, Involve’s Partnerships and Community Projects Manager says:

“Involve Kent is thrilled to be working in partnership with Maidstone Borough Council on this exciting new project. It’s fantastic to be able to offer local residents the opportunity to get involved and play a central part in developing and improving town centre green spaces. We will be in Brenchley Gardens this Friday and would love for you to drop in for chat with us to find out how you can team up with our horticultural specialist and make a difference to a green space near you.”
