Earlier this year, Maidstone Borough Council (MBC) launched a new art competition, inviting entries inspired by Mote Park. There were two categories, one for adults aged 18 and over and another for under 18’s; artworks could be submitted in any medium, except photography.
More than 50 entries were received for the adult category, and a further 16 from the under 18’s, encompassing a broad variety of artforms, from pencils and acrylics to mixed media, woodwork and embroidery.
After much deliberation by the judges, a shortlist of 20 artworks have now been chosen and the artists invited to exhibit their work.
Cllr Claudine Russell, Cabinet Member for Communities, Leisure and Arts at MBC said:
“It was great to see so many entries for this competition, every piece of artwork submitted has really brought many different areas in the park to life. I want to say a massive thank you to everyone who submitted an entry and encourage people to come along and see for yourself the wonderful artwork that has been created based on our stunning park.”
The exhibition will be held in the new Mote Park Learning Space and will be open to the public from Monday 23 October, through to Friday 3 November (closed on Sunday 29 October) between 10.30am to 3.30pm each day, and will be free to visit.
Head Judge, Cas Holmes, commented:
“Judging the Mote Park Art competition has been both a pleasure and a challenge. A pleasure to see the diversity of entries which reveal our connection to this beautiful park through paint, pencil and mixed media work. A challenge, because each and every entry was deserving of a space which meant selecting the final pieces proved difficult. Thank you to everyone who took part.”
A special Preview event will be held for those selected to exhibit, and their friends and family, on Saturday 21 October, when the overall winners of the Art Competition will also be announced.
