The survey is now open and will also help the council understand if there are any barriers that prevent people from doing what they can to help towards the climate emergency. It will also give people the opportunity to share their ideas about what can be done to help protect the environment and tackle climate change.
Cllr David Burton, Leader of MBC said:
“It is important we understand from our residents if we are on the right track with the actions we have prioritised to help us achieve the council being as close to carbon neutral as possible by 2030.“In October 2020 a Biodiversity and Climate Change Action Plan was agreed and in April 2023 this plan was reviewed and updated as part of the scheduled review. We intend to do everything we can help try and protect our planet from further damage. Please take part to help bring about change and let us know your views.”
In 2019 Maidstone Borough Council declared a climate emergency and pledged to achieve as close to carbon neutral as possible by 2030. Carbon Neutrality also referred to as Net-Zero can be achieved through reducing existing emissions and actively removing greenhouse gases. At a borough wide-scale, in accordance with national government targets, MBC has set out carbon reduction milestones to reach near to Net-Zero by 2041.
The Biodiversity and Climate Change Action Plan covers nine key themes: Active travel and green transportation; decarbonising and insulating homes and buildings; generating renewable energy; reducing waste; adapting to climate change; enhancing and increasing biodiversity; making the council estate carbon neutral; communications and engagement; and sustainable decision-making processes and governance.
Feedback received will help inform the delivery of the MBC Biodiversity and Climate Change strategy and explore ways the council can support and engage with residents.
The survey closes on 1 January 2024 and will take around 8 to 10 minutes to complete, take part now: https://letstalkmaidstone.uk.engagementhq.com/climate-change-survey-2023
