Maidstone Borough Council (MBC) is working with local charity - Involve Kent - on a ‘Green Spaces’ project which is funded by the UK Government.
Fairmeadow Fridays is led by Involve and brings together local residents in gardening activities to help keep the riverside walk looking great.
The team meet every Friday between 10am - 12pm (by the Old Boat Café on the riverside) and welcomes volunteers (aged 18+) to join them and keep Maidstone looking nice for everyone to enjoy. So far, the team has added bright summer bedding, new lavender and verbena in the raised brick flowerbeds and is creating a new planting feature in the disused waterfall area.
The focus of Green Spaces is to help improve areas in the community to make them more welcoming whilst boosting the volunteers own wellbeing.
MBC Cabinet Member for Community Cohesion and Safety – Cllr David Naghi said:
Fairmeadow Fridays are a fantastic initiative bringing this area of the riverside to life. It is great to see a volunteering project like this restoring pride in the borough and it is fabulous to see all their hard work coming to life.I would encourage everyone who has the time to get involved to volunteer and be part of the Green Spaces project to help improve areas in the community, make them more welcoming and boost their own wellbeing.
In the coming months the volunteers will move along the riverfront towards the Archbishops Palace and start a tree planting project throughout Maidstone which will include the riverside.
Fairmeadow Fridays are a great opportunity for people to get outdoors, improve green spaces, connect with others and benefit their wellbeing. No experience is required as the gardening activities are led by Involve’s experienced gardener, all tools and equipment are provided. If you can spare a couple of hours on a Friday morning to help or would like to find out more about this project, please email: grow@involvekent.org.uk or call: 03000 810 005.
