The Deputy Mayor of Maidstone Cllr Martin Round has led the flag raising ceremony at the Town Hall today – Monday 24 June, to commemorate Armed Forces Day.

Flags have been raised throughout the country today on buildings and famous landmarks as a mark of respect and appreciation for the work of the Armed Forces.

Joining the Deputy Mayor at the ceremony today were Mrs Victoria Wallace  - representing the Lord-Lieutenant of Kent, members of 36 Engineer Regiment and Queen’s Gurkha Engineers based at Invicta Park Barracks and veterans, with prayers led by The Very Rev John S Richardson.

The Deputy Mayor said:

“It is such an honour to raise this flag today and show our gratitude for the amazing work of all members of our Armed Forces.

“Whether currently serving or retired, all Armed Forces personnel are a credit to our country, from cadets, veterans, and reservists.  This is an opportunity for us all to collectively show our appreciation for the incredible work they all do for our country.

“The whole of the Maidstone borough has a rich association with the military, since 1797 it has been an army base or barracks. Lenham celebrated its association with the REME at an event at the weekend. Headcorn, Staplehurst, the Sutton’s and Detling all provided Air Bases for the RAF during the Second World War and provided homes for pilots from around the world.

“This special celebration gives us the chance to also pay tribute to the families and friends of all those past and present serving members of the Armed Forces, for the incredible support they also give.”

The flag, which was raised on a mobile mast today, was moved to the top of Maidstone’s Town Hall at the end of the ceremony where it will fly for the rest of the week.
