Half a million pounds worth of funding has been made available for groups, communities and organisations taking action to combat the climate and nature crises in the Maidstone area.

Maidstone Borough Council recently launched the two funding opportunities from the Nature Recovery Fund and Climate Action Fund which will assist organisations in creating a more sustainable future for residents in the borough.

The Nature recovery fund offers £488,000 available over several tranches and designed to deliver on Maidstone’s Nature Recovery Declaration and Commitments.

Grants will support medium to large-scale projects that protect, restore, and enhance local habitats, helping reverse biodiversity loss and create resilient ecosystems. Funding will be distributed in phases between 2025 and 2027, with grants starting from £10,000 up to £50,000 and beyond for larger initiatives.

Complementing the Nature Recovery Fund, the Climate Action Fund offers £12,000 for smaller community projects focused on nature-based solutions to climate change. Grants will range from £1,000 up to £3,000, supporting grassroots efforts to reduce carbon emissions and promote sustainable practices.

Both funds reflect Maidstone Borough Council’s commitment to achieving net zero emissions and creating a borough that is adapted for climate change. Projects funded will contribute to healthier ecosystems, improved green spaces, and stronger community engagement in environmental action.

Councillor Rachel Rodwell, Cabinet Member for Climate Transition and Nature Recovery, said: “For the first time, Maidstone is offering dedicated funds to support projects that will shape a greener, more sustainable future for our borough. These grants are designed to connect habitats, restore nature, and empower communities to make choices that benefit our planet.

We’re looking to back initiatives such as rewilding schemes, habitat restoration, wild grazing programmes, and projects that accelerate the transition to green energy and reduce reliance on fossil fuels. If you have a vision that can make a real difference, we want to hear from you.”
