Maidstone Borough Council will join organisations and landmarks across the UK tomorrow, Tuesday 27 January, in marking Holocaust Memorial Day (HMD) by lighting the Maidstone Town Hall in purple at 8pm as part of the national Light the Darkness moment.

Holocaust Memorial Day is an annual day of remembrance for the six million Jewish men, women and children murdered during the Holocaust, alongside the millions of others persecuted under Nazi rule. The day also commemorates the victims of genocides in Cambodia, Rwanda, Bosnia and Darfur.

Last year, more than 200 landmarks took part in Light the Darkness, uniting communities across the country. This year’s national theme, “Bridging Generations,” highlights the importance of sharing stories, preserving testimony, and learning from both survivors and younger voices to ensure these histories are never forgotten.

By lighting the Town Hall, Maidstone Borough Council stands with communities across the UK in remembering the past and reaffirming a commitment to challenge prejudice, hatred and discrimination in all its forms.

Councillor Stephen Thompson, cabinet member for Healthier Stronger Communities said: “Lighting the Town Hall is a simple but powerful act of solidarity. Holocaust Memorial Day asks us to remember the consequences of hatred, antisemitism and indifference, and to carry those lessons forward with care and integrity. By marking this day, Maidstone joins communities across the UK in reflection and remembrance, and in affirming that the dignity of human life must never be conditional.”
