Independent traders and landlords in Maidstone town centre can now apply for funding to improve the appearance of their premises, as Maidstone Borough Council launches a second round of its Shopfront Improvement Grant Scheme.

From Wednesday 1 July 2026, eligible businesses can bid for grants between £5,000 and £10,000, covering up to 80% of total project costs. The scheme is open to shops, cafés, restaurants and service businesses located within the defined town centre boundary.

The funding aims to support improvements that enhance the visual appeal of shopfronts, helping to attract more visitors and increase footfall. Priority will be given to properties in conservation areas with heritage value, including Gabriel’s Hill, Earl Street, Week Street and High Street. Businesses outside the conservation area were also successful in the first round.

Examples of eligible works include restoring or repairing original features, upgrading signage, replacing windows or doors, installing appropriate lighting, and making meaningful improvements to the overall appearance of shopfronts and surrounding streets.

Outreach Tuition, based in King Street, was a successful grant recipient during the first round, and its Founder, Jodie Devlin, said:

“We are grateful to Maidstone Borough Council for supporting our shopfront signage project through this grant funding. The application process was straightforward and clearly explained, and the council’s Economic Development Team provided helpful guidance throughout. The new signage will be eye-catching and help us better serve local families while contributing to a more attractive and vibrant town centre.

“I would encourage any business looking to enhance their shopfront to make the most of this fantastic grant opportunity and the support available from the council.”

In order to apply, businesses and landlords must review the scheme guidance and submit an Expression of Interest form via the council’s website. Applications close on 24 August 2026, with panel assessments taking place in September.

Councillor Stephen Thompson, Maidstone Borough Council Cabinet Member for Healthier Stronger Communities, added:
“Improving shopfronts helps businesses stand out, reflect local character, complement heritage and encourage more visitors into the town centre. We encourage eligible traders and landlords to apply, to invest in their premises and support our local economy.”

Applications can be made on the Maidstone Borough Council website and find out more information by emailing ShopfrontImprovement@maidstone.gov.uk.
